ABOUT US
Achilles Research Group is a nonprofit collaborative dedicated to mapping the darker corners of the art market.
Our aim is to use novel research techniques to build a deeper understanding of art-related crime that moves beyond the collection of anecdotes available today.
We use these tools to inform the public, empower policy makers, arm authorities and assist art market stakeholders with insights to navigate the complex web of illicit networks that use art markets and institutions for illicit ends.
WHY NOW?
The United Nations recently recognized the trafficking in cultural goods as a global security issue.
Art and antiquities trafficking networks have been shown to help finance transnational organized crime and militant groups around the world.
The opaque nature of the art market provides cover for illicit cultural property to be laundered into legitimate collections, galleries, and museums.
The art market can also play a facilitating role in other criminal schemes, such as money laundering, sanctions violations, fraud and tax evasion.
Achilles Research will help identify and quantify hidden risk in the $67 billion global art market.
WORKING ACROSS DISCIPLINES AND BORDERS
To do this, Achilles Research is creating a knowledge ecosystem that aims to revolutionize investigations into the antiquities and fine art market.
Our methodology uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches, drawing from investigative journalism, anthropology, open source intelligence (OSINT) and on-the-ground investigations in conflict zones.
We use a collaborative, cross-border approach to our research. Our team works with a global network of cultural heritage experts, regional authorities, non-government organizations, and civil society stakeholders.
